Support
If you have any problems using the app, there are 3 ways of letting me know:
- Use the in-app feedback sheet (Top-right menu > Give feedback).
- Write a review in the App Store (Ouch! But, your feedback matters).
- Email me at robmoore121@gmail.com.
Privacy
The app collects usage statistics. Here's exactly what it collects and why:
- Button taps: I'd like to know which buttons are useful. For example, does anybody use the 'Send now' button, or is it something only I use? When people create new cards, how often do they enter words manually versus using AI to generate them?
- Notification interval, number of cards, number of decks: How often do people usually want to receive flashcard notifications? How many cards do people usually create? Do most people have more than one deck, or do they just put everything in a single deck?
- The name of new decks and any prompts used when generating flashcards with AI: It's of course useful to know what people want to learn when they use the app, and these text fields are the best clue to help me figure that out.
- Feedback from the 'Give feedback' page: If you choose to send feedback about the app (yay! thank you!) then I do indeed receive your feedback.
The analytics data the app collects includes a randomly generated device id, so I can understand more complicated usage patterns. This is why the data collected by the app is considered to be "linked to you". If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me by emailing me at robmoore121@gmail.com.
Security
Offline by design
The app stores all flashcard data locally on your device and does not require an internet connection to deliver notifications or maintain your learning progress.
Safety in AI flashcard generation
The app includes the optional ability to generate new flashcards using AI, based on a prompt provided by you. The model used to generate flashcards is Anthropic's Claude Haiku 4.6, which means that your flashcard generation prompts are sent to Anthropic. The API call made by our fulfilment service enforces format and content restrictions on the LLM's outputs. Input prompts are limited to a maximum size, and a rate limit applies to every user.
How it works
-
Step 1
Define flashcards in the app for words you want to remember. For example, these could be words you learned from a song you like, or a movie or TV show.
-
Step 2
At a regular interval chosen by you, the app sends you a flashcard notification that you can interact with to indicate whether you know the flashcard or not.
-
Step 3
The app takes your responses into account when deciding which word to show you next, so that over time you can confidently recall every word you want to learn.
About
This app idea originated in 2019 (7 years ago!) in London. I had just started my first job as a software engineer, and though I had a love and fascination for languages, I was struggling to fit it into my busy schedule.
The first version was called "Learnification" (a portmanteau of 'learning' and 'notification'). It worked only on Android, and I sadly never released it for public use. To build something usable and delightful for others requires more work and consideration than making something only for your own use. The app remained unchanged for some years, and I've since started using an iPhone. Nevertheless, I always dreamed of releasing this app for use by others, because I know how useful it is. Thanks to recent developments in technology that you're doubtless aware of, the time and effort required to make this happen has become easily surmountable, and that's why in early April 2026, the Banyan Flashcards app will be available for download in the iOS App Store!
I hope you love the app and it helps you achieve your language learning goals this year, and every year.
Best wishes,
Rob — Creator of the Banyan Flashcards app
